Job Description

The Process Engineer – TAD (Paper Machine Engineer) works closely with department leaders to identify issues and opportunities and to respond quickly to operational problems. He/She also works closely with Maintenance and Operating Technicians for troubleshooting, maintenance and project work.

Accountabilities

  • Responsible for the day to day effective management and achievement of targets for: Safety, Housekeeping, Cost, Quality, Production, Training and team members on the assigned production assets
  • Responsible for managing the grade changes & maintenance shutdowns to minimize the production lost
  • Responsible for maintaining the ‘’Holding bay for Quality’’ to empty (to be managed in 24 hours)
  • Work jointly with the Process Engineer (Asset PE) with all facets of the organization (Maintenance, scheduling, training, quality, shipping, material, handling, product development and finance) to resolve any issues
  • Responsible for the prioritization of the work orders in the departments
  • Responsible to ensure effective collaboration / communication both between and within the crews
  • Responsible for the Paper machine weekly follow-up: Inspections, repairs and consumables
  • Carry out job responsibilities in a safe manner. Review and ensure equipment/processes meet safety codes, policies, and guidelines
  • Establish with the Process Engineer (Asset PE) good run settings and machine center-lining initiatives
  • Optimize material specifications and conduct qualification trials lead by the Process Engineer (Asset PE)
  • Maintain a weekly follow-up of the equipment
  • Conduct product, process and equipment qualification and capability studies
  • Define, evaluate, and solve problems to achieve departmental goals and objectives
  • Reduce process variability through the introduction of industry proven tools (LEAN, 5S and Six Sigma).
  • Develop knowledge and process expertise on Tissue making equipment and plant utility and support equipment including pulping, waste handling, compressed air, and lubrication
  • Support the definition, implementation, optimization and maintenance of a documentation system for process drawings and vendor documentation and training information
  • Support the training programs with operations, maintenance and engineering personnel to increase process knowledge, troubleshooting capability, and understanding of the overall manufacturing systems
  • Identify and solve bottle-necks within the converting process as related to manufacturing control systems and equipment capability
  • Develop technology approaches which support improved plant efficiency, process improvement and manufacturing flexibility
  • Support and improve the plant maintenance plan for existing and new equipment
  • Support the performance of failure analysis of equipment and devices and collaborate with the Maintenance Technicians to implement reliability improvement action items
  • Propose capital based projects for improvement, safety, quality and other initiatives
  • Establish external contacts involving equipment and parts suppliers and construction/​maintenance contractors
  • Verifies and ensures compliance with safety expectations by conducting, coordinating and reviewing results of safety and housekeeping audits
  • Ensures effective operation of the assets to achieve daily targeted production; with a primary focus on continuous improvement
  • Contribute to the achievement of quality standards and objectives by ensuring that the team adheres to product quality specifications
  • Ensures effective utilization of the departments human, financial and equipment resources.
  • Ensures adequate staffing is available as required
  • Assists in the training of staff in methods of operation, maintenance, safety, policies and procedures, quality and general team member expectations within our organizational design

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering Field such as Chemical Engineering, Pulp & Paper Science, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience process engineering experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably within the tissue and/or paper industry
  • Experience on a TAD paper machine and equipment start-up would be an asset
  • Skilled with computer programs including statistical analytical tools, PLC programming, and Microsoft programs such as Word and Excel
  • Ability to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally
  • Must have proven complex analytical skills as well as the ability to develop sounds recommendations and solutions
  • Ability to work independently and to execute programs in a cross functional environment
  • Ability to build relationships with vendors and suppliers on a national basis as well as in local areas.
  • Hands-on approach, strong understanding of processes combined with technical knowledge
  • Must be flexible and responsive to the needs of the department/facility/business
  • Ability to plan and organize work activities, manage work time efficiently and work independently
  • Ability to partner with managers and employees to positively impact business results
